Diet and nutrition for Psoriasis
Before we look specifically at diet and nutrition for Psoriasis, we start with a more holistic view. (Ayurveda)
Psoriasis starts with gut dysfunction. The results in gut toxicity. These toxins are carried into a tissue – here it is the skin – where the immune system had already stopped paying attention due to various reason, where it triggers inflammation (jwaram). This is how it’s being classified as autoimmune inflammation. Holistic medicine is classified it under TvagRoga and modern medicine under Dermatitis.
Every personalised holistic program may have a holistic nutrition component to it. This is to reverse your current health condition as well to upgrade the entire body functions.
Holistic nutrition starts with food items that flush and repair the gut, skin and various pathways between them, as well as correct immune functions and stop inflammation. Most vegetables, fruits, nuts, herbs, species, and seeds will under this category. Many whole grains and legumes are also useful.
Most refined, fermented, fermentable and savory items are inflammatory and hence reduced or stopped gradually.
Refined items are not whole and hence causes digestive/metabolic congestion and toxins that may eventually result in acidosis/inflammation in the body. Fermentable items are those denatured items body can’t process hence decay in the gut triggering inflammation and toxicity. Most fermented items made from sugar, starch, lactose, etc. may directly aggravate the acidosis/inflammation. Savory items are the same in effect.
Why grains aggravate psoriasis? Even healthy people feel better on a dairy and wheat free diet with cognitive functions and weight. But, it’s hard to read the grain-effects in your body as it takes one or more weeks for them to appear. But, why don’t the medical doctors, scientists and media talk about it. There are solid reasons. Grain is a huge industry. Our commercial world is based on it. This is why anti-grain news is suppressed, removed and never comes out.
In my clinic, over the past 30 years, I have seen the psoriatic, arthritic and other inflammatory symptoms subsiding quickly when grains were withdrawn!
